The Camino Castle stands on a hill overlooking the town ((Basso Monferrato) hill) and is one of the most picturesque castles in Monferrato. It is located in a beautiful park full of ancient trees, in a zigzag shape, topped by a huge quadrangular tower, from which you can enjoy a wonderful panoramic view from Monferrato to the Po valley to the circle of the Alps.
It was built by the Aleramic around 1000 for defensive reasons. , both for its architectural style and its perfect state of preservation, it remains one of the most beautiful castles in Italy. The castle later belonged to the Marquis of Monferrato and was managed by the Gastaldo family for a long time until the 13th century, when the Marquis Teodoro Paleologo, in need of funds, granted the Asti brothers Tommaso and Francesco Scarampi the grant of the castle and its Camino castle, which already had its own regulations. The last castle owner of the Scarampi family, Lieutenant Colonel Ferdinando, was an expert in medieval and architectural studies and adhered to the French Viollet Le Duc school. Ferdinando restored the Camino Castle in the 18th and 19th centuries. He created a neo-Gothic restaurant, a library and a theater with murals of scenes from “Don Quixote”. During the same period, a spacious courtyard and chapel were built inside the castle. The house eventually belonged to the Asti family, who lived there until 1952, when it was sold to Somaschi’s father by Valentina Paola, Ferdinando’s daughters, and then to the current owners.
Camino Castle has long been a favorite place of the Savoy family (especially with kings Vittorio Emanuele II, Umberto I, and Vittorio Emanuele III). Many illustrious figures have stayed at the Castle of Monferrato, including Don Bosco, King Vittorio Emanuele III during the Great Exercises of 1911 and in 1928 Benito Mussolini chose here to deliver a speech at the inauguration ceremony of the Monferrato aqueduct.
Today, the castle’s frescoed halls, courtyards and parks are ideal for hosting ceremonies and cultural events, while the wine cellars preserve the fine wines of the Monferrato vineyards, such as Barbera, Grigignolino , Chardonnay, Monferrato Rosso, Grappa and Amaro del Castello, prepared according to ancient secret recipes that have been preserved to this day. Travelers can purchase the finest wines directly from the Camino Castle vineyards.
